What is Virgin Coconut Oil and why has it been called 'the healthiest oil on earth'? Virgin coconut oil is unrefined oil extracted from fresh coconuts. It is not refined, bleached or deodorised (RBD). Virgin coconut oil does not contain any trans fatty acids or cholesterol. Virgin coconut oil is known as a lauric oil, due to its high proportion of lauric acid (about 50%), or an MCT oil due to its high proportion of medium-chain triglycerides (about 65% of which lauric acid is one). The medium-chain fatty acids found in virgin coconut oil have been shown to be digested easily within the body, converting quickly into energy rather than fat. Millions of people use coconut oil as a skin moisturiser and conditioner for their hair, invariably in countries where people have glowing skin and strong, silky hair. There is an abundance of information in books and on the internet about the properties of this most amazing oil. How do I take the oil? In the Philippines it is commonly taken by the spoonful. Use in smoothies, as a spread or for cooking, simply replace your other cooking oil with virgin coconut oil .....your food will taste so much better. Since coconut oil solidifies when the temperature drops below 24C, it can be used to replace butter or margarine. Try it on crackers or jacket potatoes. Buy organic virgin coconut oil
Are there differences between brands of Virgin Coconut Oil? There are a variety of different production and packaging methods which can affect the quality and nutritional content. The origin, maturity and freshness of the coconuts also makes a difference. Many terms are used to refer to the various production processed eg. cold-pressed, cold-processed, ANH, expeller-pressed, centrifuged. Why don't you supply "Extra virgin"?What is it? Even the people who sell it don't know. It is just a marketing strategy (used to great effect by companies in the Philippines and the US), to try and convince the buyer that their oil offers something other oils don't. "Extra virgin" is a term borrowed from the olive oil industry, where there are distinct differences between virgin olive oil and extra virgin olive oil; this is definitely not the situation with VCO. Maybe we should call our oil "Coconutty Extra Virgin Coconut Oil" ......would it be honest and ethical? Buy organic virgin coconut oil
Why is virgin coconut oil a good alternative to butter or margarine? As a spread it tastes delicious! Unlike butter, virgin coconut oil does not contain cholesterol. Unlike margarine, virgin coconut oil is not a manufactured food and does not contain trans-fats and is not interesterified like margarine - it's just a pure oil pressed from fresh coconuts. An added benefit is that virgin coconut oil is made up of medium-chain fatty acids which are known to be more easily and quickly digested than the long-chain fatty acids found in butter, margarine and even olive oil. What makes virgin coconut oil ideal for cooking? Coconut oil's natural saturate content makes it able to withstand high heat so it's a good plant-based replacement to animal fats (with the bonus of being cholesterol free) and even olive oil. Although the most nutrients are to be had in raw form, for example as a cold spread, off the spoon or in smoothies, most of its nutrients remain intact even at high temperatures. Will my food taste of coconut when I use it as a cooking oil? Just as olive oil lends a slight taste of olives in cooking, so virgin coconut oil lends a mild taste of coconut. A good virgin coconut oil brings out the best in whatever you're cooking, but if you wish to have less of the taste, here's a tip: before adding ingredients, leave the coconut oil on a low to medium heat for two to three minutes and much of the flavour will dissipate. Does the oil need to be refrigerated, and what is the shelf life? No - please don't refrigerate it, it will become too solid and difficult to get out! In the UK it is best stored at ambient room temperature. The oil may liquefy on warm days as temperatures rise above 24 degrees C and this is perfectly normal. In the tropics, the oil is almost always a liquid, hence it is generally referred to as ‘coconut oil' rather than ‘coconut butter'. The shelf life is over 12 months. Even after the jar is opened, it will last many months providing it is kept in a dry place. Buy organic virgin coconut oil
Is coconut oil similar to ‘MCT oil'? MCT stands for Medium-Chain Triglycerides. MCT oil is often derived from coconut oil, albeit refined coconut oil. It is sold as an energy boosting supplement, said to be more readily digestible than other oils. We recommend anyone using MCT oil to try Virgin Coconut Oil which is nature's home of MCTs. Are your products RAW?
There is no recognised definition of the word “raw” and there are no raw police arresting companies down who make false "raw" claims (and many do). This is unlike the term “organic”, which IS highly regulated and inspected from the farms to the production facilities to the storage facilities. Even temperature claims are virually impossible to corroberate, and again there are no independent bodies checking temperatures and no inspections or certifications exist. So many times in the natural products industry we have seen “raw” products turn out to be not so raw after all (agave?). To us, eating “raw” means eating direct from the actual fruit or seed. Therefore we prefer to not make “raw” claims – no matter how appealing that is to consumers and no matter how much business that might lose us. However, we do know our producers and their coconut farms, and we make it our business to ensure that all our products are produced carefully using the most minimally disruptive methods possible. We turn many products down that do not meet this criteria. Where can I buy your products? You can order products on-line at http://www.coconutty.co.uk/ Do you supply wholesale?
